IJM Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Caroly Houmes as the organisation’s new Chief Executive.
Caroly comes to IJM Australia after eight years at IJM Netherlands. She assisted in the launch of that partner office and has served as its Executive Director since 2010. Under her leadership, IJM Netherlands grew to 9 staff, 50 volunteers and a revenue of over 1 million euros.
Following an extensive recruitment process, the Board of IJM Australia is confident that Caroly is the best person to lead the organisation into its next phase of growth.
“When Jeff Nagle completed his time as Interim Chief Executive last December, we knew we had big shoes to fill for this role,” said Andrew Ellis, Board Chair at IJM Australia. “We knew we needed someone with a unique skill set, who understood the IJM ethos. This appointment has been long awaited and is an answer to the Board’s prayers, and indeed the prayers of many.
“I’d also like to thank the rest of the Australian staff for their patience and persistence through this transition, as well as Board Member Mark Leach who has worked part-time in the office to provide day-to-day support and direction to the staff.”
Caroly is an experienced legal professional with a Masters degree in International and European Human Rights Law, from the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands. Prior to joining IJM Netherlands she worked as a legal consultant for various governmental organisations. During that time she was also involved for seven years with Soul Survivor Holland, leading ministry, speaking and raising awareness about social injustice.
Caroly brings a deep passion for and understanding of the growing movement to end slavery and violence. Through her time at IJM Netherlands, she is well-versed in IJM’s values and knowledgeable about the work of raising awareness and support and mobilising constituents. Her experience with the unique challenges and opportunities encountered by partner offices like IJM Australia will be invaluable.
Her history with and commitment to IJM, along with her professional skills and personal conviction, make Caroly a great fit for the role of Chief Executive.
“It’s my honour to serve the Australian office, and to collaborate with Australian organisations, corporations, churches and individuals – so together we can rescue thousands, protect millions and prove that justice for the poor is possible.”
Caroly begins her term at IJM Australia on Tuesday 5 September. You can hear from Caroly on Facebook Live this Friday at 12.30pm AEST.
