The Hidden Reason for Poverty the World Needs to Address Now
Collective compassion has meant an overall decrease in global poverty since the 1980s, says civil rights lawyer and IJM founder and CEO Gary Haugen. Yet for all the world’s aid money, there’s a pervasive hidden problem keeping poverty alive. Haugen reveals the dark underlying cause we must recognise and act on now.

For over 25 years, IJM has partnered with local authorities all over the world to help remove children, women and men from situations of extreme violence. In that time, one thing has become clear: The problem of violence against vulnerable people can be solved in our lifetime. And we have the results to prove it.
Dominican Republic
According to IJM’s 2022 endline study, during the decade of IJM’s presence the Dominican Republic experienced a staggering 78% decrease in the overall prevalence of commercial sexual exploitation of children. The number of children in the commercial sex trade decreased from 1 in 10 to 1 in 45. And where children were once trafficked in 95% of the cities and towns investigated, today only 25% of those locations show any signs of child trafficking – and even these cases are very infrequent.
IJM reduced slavery and violence by 50-85% in nine different jurisdictions around the world.

In 2014, IJM Australia was founded by a small group of passionate advocates. Since then, IJM Australia has grown into a powerful movement dedicated to protecting the most vulnerable and advocating for freedom.
