Caroly Houmes

Chief Executive

Prior to her appointment as IJM Australia’s Chief Executive, Caroly served for eight years at IJM Netherlands. She assisted in the launch of that partner office and went on to fill the role of Executive Director from 2010 to 2017. Caroly is an experienced legal professional with a Masters degree in International and European Human Rights Law from the University of Tilburg in the Netherlands. Before joining IJM Netherlands she worked as a legal consultant for various governmental organisations. Caroly is deeply committed to seeing the end of slavery in our lifetime.

Melinda Harvey

Director of Operations

Melinda has worked in Business Development, Operations and Project Management with not-for-profit for the past five years. She has a passion for justice and for doing development well, which led her to IJM and her postgraduate studies in International Development.

Kimberly Randle

Director of Corporate and Legal

Prior to joining IJM Australia, Kimberly was a lawyer in both Australia and the United States in commercial litigation and later family law. During her studies, Kimberly served as an intern for Senator Joseph Lieberman working directly under the Senator’s Foreign Policy Fellow from the US State Department and later at the US Supreme Court in the Office of the Clerk.

Andrew Starr

Prior to IJM, Andrew served for 12 years in Kazakhstan. Andrew co-founded and led the Central Asian branch of the charity Crossroads Foundation till his departure in 2013.

Mark Leach (Board Chair)

Mark is the Rector of Darling St Anglican Church and a leadership and organisational development consultant. After growing up in southern Africa and studying Medicine in Cape Town, Mark moved to Sydney to study theology and prepare for life as a ‘physician of the soul’.

Mark has led churches and worked as a leadership and organisational consultant in Sydney, Melbourne and Toronto, Canada. Since his earliest days as a follower of Jesus at University in South Africa, Mark has had a commitment to justice and mercy ministries as an essential outworking of life in the Kingdom of God.

Andrew Hilson

BAcc

Andrew has a wide range of experiences with both corporate and non-profit organisations. He is currently the Executive Lead at the Back In Motion Health Group, overseeing a network of allied health professionals delivering physiotherapy and related services from over 100 locations across Australia and New Zealand. Andrew has also worked as the General Manager of Finance & Corporate Services for Wesley Mission Victoria, CEO of Mission International, and Director at KPMG Corporate Finance.

He has served as a Board Director for several community-based organisations, and has consulted across many sectors in leadership, strategy, organisational effectiveness and financial management. Andrew has lived and worked in the USA and Australia plus has gained significant cross-cultural experience in South-East Asia and Africa.

Andrew has a sincere passion to make a difference in the lives of those experiencing poverty, injustice and disadvantage.

Andrew is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia & New Zealand; he lives in Melbourne with his wife and four children.

Joanna Mansfield (Company Secretary)

BA (Public Communication), LLB(Hons) , Grad Dip (Legal Practice), MIL

Joanna is the Company Secretary of IJM Australia, and is the Chief Executive Officer of WorldShare, a Christian aid and development organisation.

Joanna is passionate about justice and protection for the vulnerable and mistreated. She qualified with DLA Piper and has practiced in civil and criminal law. Joanna has previously held the roles of Research and Policy Officer for the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce, Program Director for the American Bar Association’s anti-trafficking in persons program (Solomon Islands), Justice Advisor for Save the Children (Solomon Islands) and Principal Solicitor (Self Representation Service) at Justice Connect, a not-for-profit legal centre.

Joanna lives in Sydney with her husband and young son.

Michelle England

Michelle England is a barrister who practises predominantly at the Sydney Bar, with a focus on public law and criminal law at both the trial and appellate stages. Michelle has a keen interest in law reform and legal education, and in 2016 travelled to Uganda with International Justice Mission to conduct trial advocacy training for Ugandan prosecutors for the better protection of widows and orphans from land grabbing offences.

Adam Achterstraat

Adam is currently General Manager, Strategic Initiatives for Scentre Group - owner & operator of Westfield across Australia and New Zealand. In this role he leads the company's Program Management Office.

Previously, Adam worked in State and Federal politics, including roles as Director - State Priorities to the NSW Premier, Senior Adviser to the NSW Treasurer and NSW Finance Minister, and Economic Adviser to the Federal Opposition Leader.

He started his career at Ernst & Young and has degrees in Law and Commerce.

Adam and his wife Rachel attend Manly Life Church with their children Jed and Zali, where he serves as an Elder.

Melissa Russell

Senior Vice President of Global Advancement

Melissa Russell is the Senior Vice President of Global Advancement at IJM, leading the teams responsible for IJM’s constituent, government and institutional partnerships. She drives the core strategies and engagements that fuel IJM’s growth around the globe.

Prior to her current role, Melissa led as IJM’s Vice President of Strategic Partnerships, National Director of Development and Texas Director of Development. Before joining IJM in 2008, Melissa worked in business development at the University of Texas, creating the revenue strategies and partnerships that helped launch the UT Film Institute and the nationally-acclaimed UTeach program. Melissa also worked for KPMG as the Director of Marketing in Austin, Texas, where she was responsible for accelerating growth and building brand equity in KPMG’s high-tech sector business.

Melissa received her B.A. in Journalism and her Master of Arts in Advertising and Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin.

Gary Haugen

CEO, International Justice Mission

Gary is the CEO and Founder of International Justice Mission. Before founding IJM in 1997, Gary was a human rights lawyer for the U.S. Department of Justice, where he focused on crimes of police misconduct. In 1994, he served as the Director of the United Nations’ investigation in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. In this role, he led an international team of lawyers, criminal prosecutors, law enforcement officers and forensics experts to gather evidence that would eventually be used to bring the perpetrators of the genocide to justice. Gary received a B.A. in Social Studies from Harvard University and a J.D. from the University of Chicago.

Sean Litton

President

Sean is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization, as well as IJM’s strategy and structure, and the recruitment and development of the senior leadership team. Sean reports directly to CEO Gary Haugen, helping to shape IJM’s values and culture as well as align the global team.

Sean joined IJM in 2000 as the first Field Office Director in Manila, the Philippines, where he built and led a team of lawyers, social workers, and investigators rescuing and defending children who had been raped and trafficked for sex. He then moved to Thailand to lead IJM’s team there in combating sex trafficking of children. Sean has since served IJM in increasingly senior leadership capacities as Director of Operations for Southeast Asia, Senior Vice President of Justice Operations, and, most recently, Chief Administrative Officer.
